Don’t Leave It Too Accessible. Although you want your money where you can get it when you need it, you don’t want it to be too easy to access. If you keep all your savings in your checking account, it’s easy to dip into them for everyday expenses, eating away at the balance. Putting them in a separate account, such as a savings or money market account, means you can’t get at them without making a transfer first. That helps you keep a clear division in your mind between your checking balance, which is for day-to-day use, and your savings, which are for big expenses – planned or unplanned.

Previous Issues Jane Doe says That doesn’t mean that stocks and bonds can’t play a role in your retirement investing strategy. In fact, they probably should play a larger role than safe investments. Why? Well, if you think about it, you don’t need access to all of your retirement savings at once. You’ll draw on it over a very long time. So you really only need to put the money in safe investments that you’ll have to tap for living expenses over the next couple of years or so, plus perhaps a bit more to cover unexpected expenses and emergencies. The bulk of your savings can then go into a portfolio of stocks and bonds (or, more likely stock funds and bond funds), which can generate the higher returns you’ll need to maintain your purchasing power against inflation and prevent you from depleting your nest egg too soon.

At one point, Buffett was staring at a loss of over $10 per share.

Press In addition to the individual stocks, I would own dividend paying exchange traded funds, or ETFs, specializing in dividends. This would be for the mid-term "tactical" portion of my dividend portfolio, and I could get broad diversified exposure with just one or two trades. But also, in this low interest rate environment, if rates rise quickly, it will put pressure on dividend stocks. So with just one or two trades, I could move a portion of my portfolio to cash until the rate at which rates were rising slowed and close to peaking. You could then re-enter the dividend ETFs at higher dividend yields and a lower price. This would be a lower risk level entry point and why I say "tactical."
