A CD ladder also helps you take advantage of rising interest rates. Right now, if you put your whole nest egg into a five-year CD, your money is tied up for the next five years earning less than 1% interest. A chart of historical CD interest rates at Bankrate shows that this is the lowest rate CDs have earned in more than 30 years. If interest rates rise over the next five years, bumping the payment for CDs up to 2%, 4%, or even higher, you can’t buy a new CD at that higher rate unless you cash in your old one and pay the penalty. TOP TEN HOLDINGS Windows 8 desktop, Windows 7, XP & Vista Defined Contribution Plans Money market funds seek a stable net asset value, or NAV per share (which is generally $1.00 in the United States); they aim to never lose money. The $1.00 is maintained through the declaration of dividends to shareholders, typically daily, at an amount equal to the fund's net income. If a fund's NAV drops below $1.00, it is said that the fund "broke the buck." For SEC registered money funds, maintaining the $1.00 flat NAV is usually accomplished under a provision under Rule 2a-7 of the 40 Act that allows a fund to value its investments at amortized cost rather than market value, provided that certain conditions are maintained. One such condition involves a side-test calculation of the NAV that uses the market value of the fund's investments. The fund's published, amortized value may not exceed this market value by more than 1/2 cent per share, a comparison that is generally made weekly. If the variance does exceed $0.005 per share, the fund could be considered to have broken the buck, and regulators may force it into liquidation. Jeff – Great article. An excellent tax strategy might apply to 10% of readers, but not the other 90%. There may also be multiple tax strategies with a single investment, and that’s when an article can start looking more like it comes from an accounting journal than a blog! Submitted by Marc on June 16, 2014 - 4:59pm I have many books that explain in great detail the ins and outs of different investment choices, such as mutual funds, treasury inflation protected securities (TIPS), ETFs, municipal bonds, etc. However there are not many books with sound strategies for when to buy each type of investment. Also, most investment books that exist as of this writing (2011), still cling to the notion that most people should invest in mutual fund stocks and bonds. However, a decade of experience now shows that may not have been the smartest move over the last ten years, and ten years is a long time. Stocks don't always go up, even in the long run. Most financial book authors who wrote books before 2008 didn't realize that could happen. This time it really is different. Inflation is running 3%, stocks are scary and most fixed rate investments aren't even keeping up with inflation. Reply to HSP Tweets Bonds, individual or bundled in funds, are loans you give to governments, municipalities or corporations that then pay you regular interest. When the bond matures, its face value is returned to you. We often recommend clients purchase bonds in a bond ladder, which is a collection of bonds that have different maturity dates set to match their future cash flow needs. Bonds are a lower-risk option than other investments, which means lower returns (usually). Buy bonds not to grow money but for the regular interest income they produce, and for the guaranteed principal you will receive when they mature. Treasury Notes. These medium-term securities range from 2 years to 10 years in length. Their price can be greater than, less than, or equal to their face value, depending on demand, and they pay interest every six months until they mature. You can sell a Treasury note before it reaches maturity, but you can’t always get full value for it. If interest rates have risen since the time you bought it, investors have little reason to buy your note, since newly issued notes pay more. In early 2016, the interest rates for 5-year Treasury notes fell between 1% and 1.5% – better than you could do with a 5-year CD. Ethereum Classic Price I have a mortgage which is lower than any rent I’ve ever paid. I have started paying back my outrageous student loans and I have about 5k in credit card debt, in which 1/2 isn’t being charged interest currently. I have a teacher’s retirement fund (I’m only 2 years in) and I put $150 pre-tax toward a Valic account. Before food (groceries or eating out) and gas, I have approximately 1.5% of my salary remaining. Until my salary miraculously changes, is there something else I should be considering to lower my debt or help create a savings?
