89. ***EXCLUSIVE DEAL*** I’ve been doing some research and came across this site. I like that you provided many options to ponder. I’m going to be receiving an inheritance from my Grandfather soon. I’m not sure exactly how much it will be, but his house is being sold and split four ways, so I’m guessing somewhere around 40k give or take. I’m 34 years old, no debt (besides mortgage), wife and three children (10,10, 5), 335k on my mortgage, 55k in TSP that I contribute about 5k a year to. I’m also looking at retiring from the Marines in about five years, with a pension of around 30k a year with 100% medical and dental. I have around 7k in emergency savings and plan on using some of the inheritence to top that off at 15-20k. I also plan on talking to a financial counselor for some advice on what to do with the bulk of the money, but I’m curious about your thoughts. Thanks!

Principal Global Investors is a member of the Principal Financial Group. Best ETFs The good news is that there are strategies for increasing your income stream to more than a pathetic trickle, from shifting cash into higher-yielding options to tilting your bond and even stock portfolio towards investments that can generate more income. To be sure, aggressive yield chasing can undermine your long-term strategy; you may remember what happened to investors who were attracted to the juicy payouts on subprime mortgage bonds. “Reaching for more yield today can be false comfort if it comes at the price of degrading your principal,” warns Christine Benz, head of financial planning at Morningstar. “You need to respect that the purpose of many of your income investments is to provide stability to your overall portfolio.”

This compares favorably with most of the other alternatives, including high-yield, investment-grade and emerging-market debt, and a basket of U.S. common dividend-paying stocks. [Preferred shares are sort of a stock and bond hybrid; they generally pay a fixed dividend and put you ahead of common-stock holders in cashing in shares if the company's assets are liquidated.]
Maybe it’s unfair to rate this traditionally conservative strategy as a bad investment on our list. But the fact is, at today’s returns, you’re almost guaranteed to lose money. If inflation is 2% and your CD pays at best 1.5%, it isn’t hard to figure out that you’ll be in worse shape when it matures. Plus, you won’t have access to the money in the meantime, so you’ll be out even more in missed opportunity if interest rates go up (which, economists universally agree, they will; the only question is when).
Money market funds seek a stable net asset value, or NAV per share (which is generally $1.00 in the United States); they aim to never lose money. The $1.00 is maintained through the declaration of dividends to shareholders, typically daily, at an amount equal to the fund's net income. If a fund's NAV drops below $1.00, it is said that the fund "broke the buck." For SEC registered money funds, maintaining the $1.00 flat NAV is usually accomplished under a provision under Rule 2a-7 of the 40 Act that allows a fund to value its investments at amortized cost rather than market value, provided that certain conditions are maintained. One such condition involves a side-test calculation of the NAV that uses the market value of the fund's investments. The fund's published, amortized value may not exceed this market value by more than 1/2 cent per share, a comparison that is generally made weekly. If the variance does exceed $0.005 per share, the fund could be considered to have broken the buck, and regulators may force it into liquidation.
