u @ Kyith I guess I’m not following you. Did I mention something about this in the podcast? I was sharing some of my bad investments not anything I made money on in the past 5 years.
Practical analysis for investment professionals
Featured in Moneywatch Also, I have found that there are no hard and fast set of rules when it comes to the market and there are a thousand factors to consider when investing. Time until retirement, risk tolerance, amount of time until you might need the money, saving for college or a house, expected return, etc etc etc. You make that clear at the end of each podcast but I just thought I would echo that sentiment.
Apart from the 401k, you also have the 403b. There are several types of annuities, but at the end of the day, purchasing an annuity is on par with making a trade with an insurance company. They’re taking a lump sum of cash from you. In return, they are giving you a stated rate of guaranteed return. Sometimes that return is fixed (with a fixed annuity), sometimes that return is variable (with a variable annuity), and sometimes your return is dictated in part by how the stock market does and gives you downside protection (with an equity indexed annuity).
Thanks for your question. PSEC has a history of dividend cuts and a low Dividend Safety Score. I tried to focus on companies with relatively safe payouts and stronger dividend track records.
TD Ameritrade Promotional Codes Go for un-sexy As investments. The role of bonds is chiefly to reduce your risk. That's best done by owning the mousy, un-sexy funds you may have overlooked: those that invest in Treasuries and other U.S. government securities. They're yielding nearly zilch. But when stock prices take a tumble, they generally rise in price. Over the 12 months ending in early March, after general alarm spread through the markets, Morningstar's intermediate-term government bond fund average rose 1.54 percent. If you owned both government funds and stocks, the government funds would have reduced your loss. If you want to hold Treasuries to maturity, skip the funds and buy them, free, through TreasuryDirect.gov. If you like the convenience of easy withdrawals, buy the funds.
Current yield: 2.7 percent Another problem with rewards checking accounts is that they’re not available everywhere. Bankrate reports that the majority of high-yield checking accounts are offered at small local banks or credit unions, rather than major national banks. However, if you can’t find this type of account at a bank in your area, you can open one at an online bank.

The ableBanking Money Market Savings is offering 1.70% APY — higher than even the promotional rates of any other MMAs I evaluated. This bank prides itself on low overhead, and returns part of that savings in the form of a $25 bonus to any charity you choose when you open an account. There’s a $250 minimum to open an account. Major downsides? No check writing and higher fees than the competition, including $30 for overdrafts.

The efforts to restructure Puerto Rico debt probably will dominate the headlines in 2016, as its government, Congress, and investors grapple with how to reduce the commonwealth’s debt burden while implementing fiscal and economic reforms to help revitalize a moribund economy. So far, there has been plenty of posturing and gamesmanship, but little progress outside of negotiations involving the island’s electric company, Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. Puerto Rico’s benchmark long-term debt issue, the 8% bond due in 2035, was trading last week around 73 cents on the dollar, indicating that investors are banking on some restructuring that will result in less-than-full recovery.
Make investing in stocks for the long-term automatic. It’s easy to up automatic investments either with your bank, a discount broker, or even a smartphone app like Robin Hood. Put money away every month, when time are good and times are bad. Avoiding investing mistakes will make you more money in the long run than trying to pick the hottest sector/stock/fund/investment over the years.
Thanks for the post. I think it all starts with goals and coming up with a strategy that facilitates achieving those goals. While it’s true we normally use some sort of a benchmark to evaluate and compare performance we can’t forget the concepts of risk vs reward. Some of the suggestions in this post require doing research and due diligence so that you can understand the risk and potential reward. Once you do that then you can decide doing whatever you want. I’m a passive investor focused on low-cost index fund (core), real estate, P2P and individual stocks and at the end of the day I don’t think anybody is right or wrong, there are many flavors out there for everyone. As long as you do your due diligence and make informed decisions then at least you’ll be able to have ownership and hold yourself accountable

Website Most people don’t think of bonds as high-yield investments. Indeed, companies generally like debt as opposed to issuing equity because it’s ultimately a cheaper form of financing. Some bonds that creep into the not-so-hot-credit arena, however, make for surprisingly high dividend payers, and the iShares 0-5 Year High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:SHYG) is one of the most effective ways of making such a play.

I’m selling my house and should make about $40k from the sale. I’m going to pay off credit card debt first but would like to make interest on the remaining $30k. I’ll only have about 6-9 months before I need it for a down payment on a new home. Suggestions?

This is a bank run in the sense that there is a mismatch in maturities, and thus a money fund is a "virtual bank": the assets of money funds, while short term, nonetheless typically have maturities of several months, while investors can request redemption at any time, without waiting for obligations to come due. Thus if there is a sudden demand for redemptions, the assets may be liquidated in a fire sale, depressing their sale price.
Then there is also the element of reinvestment. Will you be reinvesting or taking the distributions in the form of cash. If you use a disciplined reinvestment strategy that could enhance the overal yield of your portfolio.
Dividend Safety Score: 72 Dividend Growth Score: 52 5 Stars 0 Votes Sector: Basic Materials Industry: Diversified Chemicals Editorial Reviews Morningstar’s Pikelny likes four closed-end funds offered by BlackRock. All invest in junk bonds and take on a moderate amount of debt to boost their payouts. The funds have many of the same holdings and similar yields, so Pikelny considers them virtually interchangeable: BlackRock Corporate High Yield (COY, $8, 7.6%); BlackRock Corporate High Yield III (CYE, $8, 7.9%); BlackRock Corporate High Yield V (HYV, $13, 8.2%); and BlackRock Corporate High Yield VI (HYT, $13, 8.1%). All recently traded at close to net asset value. Pikelny suggests buying the one trading at the biggest discount to NAV (or at the smallest premium).
