7 reviews Actively Managed Funds The basics The Single Best Investment Legal Notice When business goes bad, some of the bonds held by high-yield funds will default or have their credit ratings slashed, causing their prices to fall. That has been happening recently to bonds issued by energy and mining companies. The money you lose from downgrades and defaults could easily cost you more than you're earning from the fund's higher interest rates. In fact, a 2012 study by the Vanguard mutual fund company found that investors in these funds, on average, do not—I repeat, do not—collect the high yields that they expect.
He went one step further and asked his wife, Susan Pelton, for her best-ever investment advice. This made me quite curious. Susan is very intelligent but has no professional background in finance. As soon as I saw her first three words, I was hooked.

In short, a closed-end fund is like an exchange-traded fund in that it too trades on an exchange, but it has a limited number of units, and thus tends to trade very tightly around its net asset value, meaning at times funds can trade at discounts or premiums to their collective holdings. They're typically actively managed, which means high fees, which is an immediate turnoff in today's index-ETF-crazed market - but because they can use leverage to juice dividends and returns, good CEF management can more than make up for their higher costs.
The crisis, which eventually became the catalyst for the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, almost developed into a run on money funds: the redemptions caused a drop in demand for commercial paper, preventing companies from rolling over their short-term debt, potentially causing an acute liquidity crisis: if companies cannot issue new debt to repay maturing debt, and do not have cash on hand to pay it back, they will default on their obligations, and may have to file for bankruptcy. Thus there was concern that the run could cause extensive bankruptcies, a debt deflation spiral, and serious damage to the real economy, as in the Great Depression.

One way around this problem is to choose no-penalty CDs, which let you withdraw your money in full at any time. No-penalty CDs, also known as liquid CDs, don’t pay as much as regular CDs, but they usually provide a bit more interest than a basic savings or money market account. Liquid CDs with terms ranging from 3 to 18 months, at rates from 0.03% to 0.87% APY, do exist. There aren’t very many financial institutions that offer them, but many of those that do are online banks, which are accessible to anyone with an Internet connection.

BI ACCOUNTS Municipal Bonds ETF administrative costs are low – as little as one-quarter the cost of administration for an actively managed portfolio, such as a mutual fund. Trading activity is considerably reduced compared to the typical mutual fund, producing less taxable capital gains (irrelevant in a tax-deferred retirement account) and a more efficient return on investment. ETFs are particularly useful in retirement portfolios, as investors have recognized the importance of asset allocation, rather than individual stock selection, and usually have an investment horizon of 10 years or more.

Alternative Financial Medicine: High-Yield Investing in a Low-Yield World Kindle Edition Carlo Pietro Giovanni Guglielmo Tebaldo Ponzi, better known as Charles Ponzi, was an opportunistic Italian businessman that resorted to swindling the public at large in both Canada and the United States back in the 1920’s. He was born in Italy in 1882, worked in his early years as a postal worker, but arrived in Boston in 1903, ready to make his fame and fortune. After a number of odd jobs, he moved to Montreal and worked for a banker that covered above-average interest payments with deposits on new accounts in the bank. As the wheels were turning in his mind for a way to make money on his own, Carlo hit hard times and was arrested for check forgery, but jail time provided mentors in the art of swindling and only strengthened his resolve to make big money and quickly.
